Home EV chargers draw power from the homeowner’s electrical system, meaning the electricity used to charge the EV comes from the same source as the rest of the home’s power. When you plug in your EV, the charger delivers electricity from your home’s system to your vehicle’s battery.

The ChargePoint Home Flex can deliver up to 37 miles of range per hour of charging, depending on the vehicle and the amperage setting used. The total time to fully charge an EV will depend on the battery capacity of the vehicle and the charging rate. For example, a typical EV with a 60 kWh battery could take about 6-8 hours to charge from empty to full using the maximum 50-amp setting.

Charging an EV at home is generally around 4x cheaper than gas. To roughly calculate your car’s cost to charge at home, you can use Ontario’s off-peak rates, which are $0.074 c /kWh, and your car’s battery/range.

For example: Ford Mustang Mach-E Extended Range AWD requires an average of 23.1 kWh to travel 100 km. To add 400 kilometres to its 446km battery, it would therefore require 92.4 kWh of electricity, which would cost around $6.83.

A homeowner pays for home charging using the ChargePoint Home Flex through their regular home electricity bill. The charger draws power from the home’s electrical system, and the cost of the electricity used for charging is added to the homeowner’s monthly utility bill, just like any other household appliance. The ChargePoint app can help track energy usage and costs associated with charging the EV at home, providing detailed reports and insights.

It’s a good idea to check your local electricity rates. In Ontario, for example, the best times to charge your car at lower rates are usually from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM on weekdays, and all day on weekends. So, it’s ideal to charge your car overnight during these times to save money.

The ChargePoint Home Flex can be powered in two ways:

1. Plug-In Installation: It can be plugged into a NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50 outlet, which are common types of electrical outlets used for high-power appliances.
2. Hardwired Installation: It can be directly hardwired into the electrical panel by an electrician, providing a more permanent and potentially higher-power connection.

Both installation methods ensure that the charger receives the necessary electrical supply to provide adjustable charging up to 50 amps.

We recommend using a certified electrician install your Homeflex charging system because they will need to set up new electrical connections from your breaker panel.

You can connect your HomeFlex to your home Wi-Fi network and link it with smart home devices like Alexa or Google Assistant using the ChargePoint App. This allows you to:

• Schedule charging when electricity costs less.
• Get reminders to plug in your car.
• Keep track of your energy use.
• See your car’s charge status.

The HomeFlex charger can deliver up to 12 kilowatts of power, allowing you to charge your car at a rate of up to 60 kilometres per hour. Users have the flexibility to choose the appropriate charging current that aligns with the capacity of their electrical panel, ranging between 20A to 50A breakers, such as 20A, 32A, 40A, or 50A.

The ChargePoint Home Flex charger typically comes with a plug that is compatible with a standard NEMA 14-50 outlet. The NEMA 14-50 is a commonly used outlet for high-power appliances and electric vehicle chargers. It provides 240 volts of power and is capable of delivering Level 2 charging to your electric vehicle.

This plug is compatible with many residential electrical systems and is often used for RV connections and EV chargers. Before installing the ChargePoint Home Flex charger, it’s important to ensure that your home has a NEMA 14-50 outlet installed and that it is correctly wired to handle the charger’s power requirements. If you don’t have a NEMA 14-50 outlet, you may need to consult an electrician to install one. Additionally, ChargePoint may provide adapters for different types of outlets, so it’s a good idea to check the specific requirements and available accessories for your Home Flex charger model.
